Born in De Kalb, IL.  Stared playing the clarinet in his youth.  Worked for William Lewis in Chicago 1926-1940 and studied under Carl Becker and Emil Carlson while there.  During World War II worked as a tool and die maker, also continued making on a limited basis, and played the double-bas in the CBS Orchestra in 1944-1945.  Worked for Rudolf Wurlitzer at the Los Angeles branch 1946-1950.  Establised own shop in Studio City, CA, in1950.  Retired in 1979. Made many instruments in conjunction with Carl Becker that do not bear his name.  Made about 20 violins completely on his own, and 45 double-basses.  Own golden brown varnish.  Used birch for some basses in the mid-1940's.  Did quite a lot of experimantation with bass bars and f-hole.  Early instruments were unlabeled.
